Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois is structured as an independent regional provider of health insurance policies for the residents of Illinois. It is a private company, even though it is part of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association, one of the earliest managed health care insurance companies in the U.S. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois was founded in 1936 and is a division of the Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). • Patients can choose plans with a predictable co-pay or one with a cap on expenses.
• Many procedures require preauthorization.

Individual and family plans include a range of deductibles and co-pays. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois also offers a high deductible plan for use with a health savings account, and a short-term coverage plan for times when a patient is in-transition. All individual and family policies are limited to residents of Illinois who are not eligible for Medicare.
