Now part of the Aetna Group, the Aetna Insurance Company was founded in Hartford, Connecticut as a life and property insurance company. The company added health insurance coverage in 1899, but sold those first health insurance plans only to owners of Aetna’s other types of insurance.

Aetna’s 1996 merger with U.S. Healthcare and 1999 merger with Prudential Healthcare strengthened the health insurance side of Aetna’s business.
